there’s a great place in Tennessee called the Elephant Sanctuary (www.elephants.com) that provides habitat and care for retired circus elephants. i was already aware of them, but just bought a book by the founder, Carol Buckley, called “Tarra and Bella,” about how their first elephant struck up an unlikely friendship with a stray dog that lived on the preserve. it’s very uplifting! the main problem elephants have is with feet and joints from walking on concrete too much. at the Sanctuary, they have many acres to roam upon and socialize…it’s great stuff they’re doing for fellow intelligent creatures. i do volunteer work for Stray Rescue of St. Louis, and i also support the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch in Texas, run by my pal Kinky Friedman. they all do noble work, and are online and on Facebook as well. check ’em out!
