Suspicious Package Day

There was a hazmat response at Scott Air Force Base today, across the Mississippi from me.  Some piece of mail or other apparently caused respiratory problems and/or skin rashes in a few people.  The responders did everything right, though, so that was good.  http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/article_ea4c2e5a-d3e4-11e0-9c07-001a4bcf6878.html?fb_ref=.Tl6qMsq_0G4.like&fb_source=profile_multiline.  They still haven’t figured out what package or envelope it was, but it’s been narrowed down to one particular bin at the mail facility.

Of course, it invoked fears of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but it’s very doubtful that it’s connected.  Some people just mail stuff they shouldn’t because they don’t know any better, not because they’re terrorists.  But I’ve dealt with materials where one whiff can kill ya, so better cautious than dead.

  1. Bob, I hope no one was injured or made ill with the unidentified substance. Why would anyone “accidentally” mail a toxic or hazardous chemical through the mail?

Thanks for your interesting and informative posts,
    Diane T.

  2. It could’ve been a product sample, for all I know, and people overreacted with imaginary symptoms. Ten years ago, a flight got held up here in St. Louis because of some white powder on the floor of the bathroom in the plane. It was fluff from toilet paper. Or the package could have accidentally had something spilled ON it during shipment. You just never know.
